Chemex is a one-piece glass carafe brewer that uses extra-thick bonded paper to produce a very clean, tea-like cup with high clarity and low oils. The thick filter (about 20–30% heavier than standard papers) slows the drawdown and screens out fines and bitterness, rewarding a steady pour and slightly coarser grind.
Designed and patented in 1941 by chemist Peter Schlumbohm, the Chemex became a mid-century design icon and still brews on the same principles today: conical filter, thick paper, and a graceful hourglass carafe.
